Zachary S. Zumsteg, MD, is a faculty member in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Cedars-Sinai Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute. He completed his training in radiation oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Zumsteg specializes in the treatment of head and neck cancers. In addition to his clinical practice, he is actively engaged in research spanning epidemiology, health services, clinical trials and translational applications. Through this work, Dr. Zumsteg developed a novel risk stratification system for patients with intermediate risk prostate cancer that is currently widely used by oncologists in clinical practice and cited in National Comprehensive Cancer Network Guidelines. Additionally, his group’s work was adopted by the American Joint Commission on Cancer for the 9th Edition of the pathologic staging system for p16-positive oropharyngeal cancer. Dr. Zumsteg is also heavily involved in clinical trial development. He led the conception and development of the NRG Oncology Developmental Therapeutics and Radiotherapy Groups’s white paper detailing recommendations for early phase clinical trial design for combinations of novel therapeutics and radiation. He is the national radiation oncology co-chair for NRG GU007 and NRG GU010 and is the principal investigator of several investigator-initiated trials studying deintensification of therapy for HPV-associated oropharyngeal cancer. He has produced numerous peer reviewed publications, with articles appearing in journals such as Lancet Oncology, Journal of Clinical Oncology, JAMA Oncology, Annals of Oncology, and Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, among others. Dr. Zumsteg's research program attempts to bridge epidemiology, clinical outcomes, and biology, thereby utilizing tumor, and patient, associated factors to optimize personalization of treatment for head and neck and genitourinary cancers.
