Nestor Gonzalez, MD, accomplished a unique training with two completed residencies in neurosurgery and radiology, fellowship training in interventional neuroradiology (neuroendovascular surgery) and a Master of Science in Clinical Research. This allowed him to become one of the leaders in the country in the development of clinical and translational research in the cerebrovascular field. Dr. Gonzalez is the principal investigator on several NIH and American Heart Association grants, including three science innovation awards and a National Translational Science Award of the AHA. He is currently the principal investigator of the EDAS Surgical Revascularization for Symptomatic Intracranial Arterial Stenosis (ERSIAS) trial, funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke of the NIH. Dr.Gonzalez's original research has received several awards, including the Oppenheimer Research Award and the Ruth and Raymond Stotter Chair Endowment by the UCLA School of Medicine, and the Stroke Council Award by the American Heart Association (AHA). Dr. Gonzalez conducted the studies that have led to the use of EDAS revascularization as an alternative treatment for adult patients with cerebral arterial steno-occlusive disorders, including moyamoya and ICAD and has been an investigator of the trials that have defined the modern management of acute ischemic stroke, including the MERCI and SWIFT Trials. Dr. Gonzalez is an international leader in the research and management of moyamoya disease, intracranial steno-occlusive, and hemorrhagic disorders. He is the Chair of the AHA Writing Group for Moymoya Disease and Syndrome Scientific Advisory and Co-Chair of the AHA Neurointerventional Council. Dr. Gonzalez is the International Advisor for the Karolinska University (Sweden) for Complex Moyamoya and Steno-occlusive Cerebrovascular Disorders.
